The Fireweed Birth & Beyond Story

Fireweed is a weed native to Alaska, which signifies resiliency, rebirth, and the ability to overcome hardship. I feel this is a wonderful representation for how transformative birth and motherhood is for women.

Fireweed Birth & Beyond was created to support women in all aspects of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. This is a life changing experience and we aren't meant to do it alone. We are on this journey with you!

Hi there!

I’m Kayla, born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. After graduating from UAA with a BS in Nursing, life took me to AZ and FL for 11 years and now I’m back home to stay!

I’ve always loved caring for others and making a difference in lives. I began my journey as a Registered Nurse, mainly working in critical care with a short stint in Labor & Delivery. During which time I learned a hospital birth was not for me, I witnessed first-hand the medicalization of birth that goes against nature, and I didn’t want that for myself and knew there had to be another way!

In 2020, I became pregnant with our first baby who we later lost to an ectopic pregnancy; it was this loss that really changed my life and how I viewed the world, especially the medical system.  I spent the next year and a half battling hormone and fertility issues which jump started my own health and holistic journey.  It was during this journey that I not only learned how to heal my body, but also prepare for future pregnancies. My beliefs around the medical system were challenged and changed to be more holistic, trusting of nature and my own body! After 1.5yrs of healing, I became pregnant again and knew this pregnancy and birth would be as natural and hands-off as possible. I had learned so much about my body and truly trusted it to nurture and birth a healthy baby with no medical interventions.

My goal was to give birth at a birth center, though, unfortunately as with many pregnancies and births, things don’t always go as we plan. Due to our plan for a birth center, I didn’t think I needed a Doula for support, and man was I wrong! Many factors played into this decision (lack of available Doulas for my near Christmas due date, finances and being truly uneducated about how important a Doula is). If I could go back, I would not think twice about hiring a Doula. I now know their value and will not go without one for future pregnancies and births.

Not hiring a Doula is my biggest REGRET!

Reflecting on my own experience, having a Doula with us would have been priceless; I needed the support, but my husband needed it even more as a first time Dad and this became the driving force for me to become one!

So, I dove head first into all thing’s pregnancy and birth! My passion truly grew, and I’ve spent the last two years educating myself, joining an online Doula community, networking with local Doulas and working with home birth midwives.

Birth has become my passion! Every woman deserves to have the birth of her dreams, and I truly believe through education, support and advocacy this is achievable for everyone!

I will be there with you every step of the way and look forward to supporting you on your journey!
